“It Doesn’t Happen to Me” Isn’t Good Enough Anymore

I’ve heard it too many times.

“It doesn’t happen to me.” “My team doesn’t have these issues.” “Our organization is different.”

The problem is, that mindset misses the bigger picture. It’s not just about you, your team, or your corner of the world. These issues - the broken cultures, poor leadership, toxic environments - are happening everywhere. And even if they’re not knocking on your door right now, that doesn’t mean you’re exempt.

I coach enough people to see the aftermath of poor workplace experiences. The fear. The loss of confidence. The burnout. These are the invisible scars left behind when organizations fail to prioritize accountability, safety, and trust. And it’s not isolated. It’s systemic.

Complacency won’t fix it.

We need leaders who see possibility

What we need now are leaders who won’t accept “not my problem” as an answer. Leaders who see the cracks forming, even when others don’t. Leaders who understand that fixing these problems isn’t just about protecting their own team but creating ripples that improve workplace culture everywhere.

These are the vanguards.

Vanguards see the possibility of what can be. They refuse to settle for the status quo. They don’t let “it doesn’t happen here” be an excuse for inaction.

why complacency is dangerous

When leaders assume these issues don’t affect them, it fosters complacency. Here’s what happens next:

  1. Problems Are Ignored

Warning signs are brushed off as “isolated incidents.” Toxic behaviors are tolerated because, on the surface, everything seems fine.

  2. Cultures Decay

Over time, a lack of action erodes trust. Employees grow disengaged. Performance suffers.

  3. Reputations Crumble

Companies that don’t act now find themselves struggling later - to attract talent, to innovate, and to recover from crises.

Complacency doesn’t just hurt people. It damages businesses, communities, and entire industries.

it takes all of us

Real change doesn’t come from one leader or one company. It takes all of us, collectively, to challenge complacency and rebuild workplaces into environments where people thrive.

We need leaders who:

  • Refuse to take no for an answer. When someone says, “That’s just how it is,” they push back.

  • Call out the gaps. If a policy exists but isn’t enforced, they don’t let it slide.

  • Model accountability. They show others what it looks like to lead with integrity.

It’s not enough to care in silence. True leadership demands action, visibility, and commitment.

 why i'm determined?

I’m determined because I’ve seen the aftereffects too many times. I coach people who are left picking up the pieces after poor leadership, bad experiences, and toxic cultures.

I see the damage that complacency causes—the brilliant employees who burn out, the teams that stop trusting, the companies that lose their way.

And I know it doesn’t have to be this way.

 be a vanguard

This is your call to action. Stop waiting for someone else to fix it. Stop saying, “It doesn’t happen to me.” Start leading the way.

We need vanguards: the leaders who aren’t afraid to act, who see what’s possible, and who understand that it takes all of us to create lasting change.

Are you ready to step up?
